Well... it's official...it IS the holiday season. Time to deck the halls, shop for gifts, bake holiday treats along with so many other happenings during this six-week period. With so much holiday hullabaloo it can make us feel as if our to-do lists will never get done!
The holidays can be so stressful and it is oh so important to stay in the moment and remember what the holiday season is all about. For me it is about appreciating and sharing with my family, friends and giving to those who are less fortunate. Practicing kindness, compassion and gratitude are important everyday, but it is especially important during the holiday hustle and bustle.
On more than one occasion I have experienced folks driving erratically and acting irrationally during the holidays because they are so stressed about getting Johnny’s video game or Susie’s special doll before they are all sold out. I know it is important to get those special gifts for our loved ones but it is also important to stay in the moment, practice kindness and most importantly be Present.
When we are Present we give a gift to ourselves.
We feel more relaxed and we aren’t worrying about how we are going to accomplish the 15+ things on our to-do lists. When you are present you are calm which helps with getting those items done with more ease! My point is to remind you to stop and enjoy the beautiful moments this holiday season. We all have SO much to be thankful for.
Give a gift to yourself and practice Being Present every day.
Here are a few tips to keep you in the Here and Now! ;)
Remind yourself to just BREATHE….I write down my inspirational daily reminders and post them on my bathroom mirror. Seeing your messages everyday will help to instill those thoughts in your mind which will result in transforming your thought patterns. I remind myself everyday to slow down and breathe.
When you find yourself starting to feel stressed a great way to instantly calm yourself is to take 5 deep breathes and breath only through your nose. It is amazing what that stillness of breath can do for you in a stressful moment!
If you have a smart phone put an appointment in your calendar or set an alarm everyday with a reminder to be in that moment. Our brain is a muscle…the more you flex it the more it will retain those thought patterns. It will become second nature for you to stay positive and be in the moment. We all need to be reminded....especially during this busy time of year.
Start keeping a gratitude journal – write down 3 things everyday that you are grateful for…if you aren’t the journaling type just think of three things you are grateful for while you brush your teeth or take a shower every morning. They can be things like gratitude for your hot shower, your significant other, the beautiful sunny day …you get the idea. When we are grateful we begin to look at everything in life with the glass half full approach.
We have a choice everyday…choose to Be Positive and Be Present.
Choose to have An Attitude of Gratitude.
